We conclude this series of articles on mass flowmeters by discussing the influence of flow conditioners.<\/p>\n

Flow conditioners according to straight sections<\/h1>\n

Multiple disturbances upstream of the equipment have a cumulative effect on the flow profile. If it is not possible to have enough straight runs, it is advisable to use a flow conditioner.<\/p>\n

Flow conditioners can provide a uniform flow profile at the sensor location. This flow profile is different from the flow profile that occurs when we have the optimal straight sections for the application. This is precisely why it is essential to calibrate the flowmeter with the flow conditioner knowing the details of the location point. By this we mean: type of gas, pipeline characteristics, available upward straight runs, disturbances and depth.<\/p>\n

Sierra brand flow conditioners:<\/strong> if straight runs are insufficient, the two types of flow conditioners provide a uniform flow profile.<\/p>\n

In-line flowmeter:<\/strong> for this type the flow conditioner is integrated inside the flowmeter body.<\/p>\n

Conditioner for insertion gauges:<\/strong> the assembly of two conditioning plates placed between two flanges can be effective. The end user supplies the flanges for this installation.<\/p>\n

Table 1 shows the required pipe run length for a mass flowmeter with integrated flow conditioning compared to an orifice plate.
\nIn all cases, flow conditioning significantly reduces the recommended distance (straight runs) upstream of the equipment for proper installation of the thermal dispersion mass flowmeter.<\/p>\n

Conclusion<\/h1>\n

Considering Sierra thermal dispersion mass flowmeters in any application, the location must first be carefully determined. It should also be reasoned a posteriori that the most convenient location may not provide the most accurate results. It is important to provide the manufacturer of the thermal mass flowmeter with the end user’s application conditions (data on the piping, the gas mixture or gases used, the process pressure, and the route and alterations of the same), so that he can offer us the most appropriate flowmeter, thus being the correct and propitious factory calibration of the meter.<\/p>\n
